La Belle Étoile focuses on the ephemeral moments that occupy the space between affiliation and detachment. In this series, I pair tightly composed figure studies with environmental details that emphasize the interplay of light with objects in my surroundings. Context is revealed when the photographs are viewed together rather than as individual artifacts.

Tension and intimacy are buoyed by purposeful gestures and the immediate environment, presented in transient fragments. The viewer is led to an emotional voyage where the tenderness of sentiments gradually supersedes plain habits and established routines, effecting a seismic shift in personal reality. A sense of absolution hovers as one eases into a new environment: the disarming constellation of a lover’s presence.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, artist George E. Holroyd III grew up in the United States, moved abroad in 2009 and currently lives in Budapest, Hungary. He employs a diaristic approach to his photo projects, visualizing his personal experiences instead of merely documenting objects and random scenarios. As such, he places a high premium on his narratives. He finds time to revisit old shooting sites and does not readily discard unused images for they might fit into his eventual body of work. Very selective in his shots, he intends to continue navigating familiar and foreign lands to further expand his portfolio.
